THE PALMER DIGGINGS.
A miner, recently arrived at N.veby from the Palmer Diggings, communicates the following to the * Mount Ida Chronicle’ : My opinion of tho Palmer ,-,l’ iver diggings is a favorable one, and I believe it will be a rich goldfield ; but I am acquainted with a number of diggers—mostly new chums—who never were so fortunate as to get even a spec. Tile climate, daring the time I was there, was unfit for Europeans. The heat during the day is something unbearable, and at night ju * S 80 d® nse an d moist that large drops adhere to the clothes—the consequences are that diarrhoea, fever, aod agne are very prevalent, I think the healthiest time te be there is frem, July to January, as the rainy season sets in about March, and continues generally four months. There is ne meat on the diggings, and the miners subsist , principally on flour and.jam. Fish, resembling mackerel, are caught in the river. Would return again to the Palmer if funds woald Eerrait, and believe I would do welt. Very ttle prospecting has been done. During my stay a carrier was rushed, and the previsions taken from him, but their value, was afterwards paid'for id gold. The diggings are pretty orderly, irt the absence of either police or Commissioner. My pick, shovel, and tomahawk I sold for L 5 6s. Flour is 3s per pound; meat there is none. There is no feed for horses.” ' ' ‘
