Monday, Mat 18. (Before J. Bathgate, Esq., R.M., and C. de V. Teachemaker, Esq., J.P.) Drunkenness. — Robert Church, Peter Brown, and Frederick French were each fined ss, with the option of forty*eight hours* imprisonment; Michael Kane, 10s or three days ; Benjamin Farra, 40i or fourteen days ; Thomas tlarkness was discharged with a caution. Vagrancy. —The notorious Anne Sherry was charged with being a rogue and vagabond within the meaning of the Vagrancy Act. Prisoner denied the charge.—His Worship ; How do you gain your living?— Prisoner : I have money in the bank. I merely came out of “trouble** on Saturday with 30s in my pocket, when I got locked-up again, t wish to leave Dunedin at once, and could easily do so. My banking account is LB. When Constable Rooney came up he told me that I was waute i aud I quietly walked away with him.—(Laughter.) —Sub-I uspeotor Mailard pointed out that if she had LSOO in the bank it would not get her off under the Act. He would prove her previous convictions. She was undoubtedly gaining a living by prostitution. A s far as money was concerned, some of these women had a large amount to their credit.—His Worship: If they come here as prostitutes I will treat them as vagrants. The oase will be remanded till co morrow to enable prisoner to show she had money. The charge of drunkenness was also adjourned. Assault. —Frederick French was charged with assaulting a little boy on the Caversham cab stand by striking him on the mouth, for which he was fined 20s, or in default six days imprisonment with hard labor. CIVIL CASKS. Leary t. Payne —ln this case plaintiff sued as assignee in the estate of Goodsir. Pell, and Co. for Ll3 13« 7d for goods sup* plied, for which judgment was given by de* fault with costs. In Asher v. Bqrthwick, a claim of L 4 8* 4d, and Asher v, M'Pherson, U2 5s Ud, judgment was idvtn by default with costs.
