THE PROVINCIAL BALANCE SHEET.
To the Editor. Sir,— When the Imprest Supply Bill was in committee in the Provincial Council the other day, the Treasurer- (Mr Turnbull) stated that the. delay in the production of the balance sheet was in consequence of the extra work entailed upon the Auditor through the amended Audit Act, which rendered it impossible for that gentleman to complete his labors earlier, and that therefore any delay in the matter must be attributed to the Auditor. I have reason to believe that this statement was not warranted by the facts, as 1 am informed that the Auditor has been requested to assist the Treasury officers in making up their books, and the delay is solely through the accounts being so much in arrear. If this is so, in justice to the Auditor, Mr Turnbull should withdraw the statement he has made.— I am, &c., _ Observer, . Dunedin, May 16.
