The battery competition with the Armstrong Sms for the Government prizes by the Naval rigade on Saturday last was somewhat abruptly terminated. Some people went out fishing And deliberately moved a boat both before and behind the targets, thus making the shooting dangerous to life. Major Atkinson sent out requesting them to move frem the place, but they positively refused, and thus the shooting had to be stopped. The guns were also in a very bad state, the wheels coming off during the practice. If the practices are to be continued new gun carriages will have to be provided. There was a slight falling off in the attendance at the Siamese entertainment in the Princess’s last evening, but the various performers went through their allotted tasks as well as if there had been a crowded house. There were several new features submitted, and the programme was equal to, if not better than either of the previous ones. Amongst the items presented were some new juggling and tumbling feats, the dwarf and bamboo tricks, and the tight-rope walking, each of which was well received, while the whole of the performers were loudly applauded. A grand programme will, we -understand, be submitted to-morrow night, when the juvenile members of the troupe will take their benefit.
The Provincial Geologist reports to the Government having visited the Preservation Inlet coalfield, where he “ found a 3ft seam of brown coal favorably situated, but dipping at an angle of 45deg. The coal could easily be got out, but the quality is such as to render working the mine a certain loss. The coal is similar, and not superior to that from Tokomairiro and Kai tangata, consequently it will never do for ocean steamers, and quite as _good can be got much nearer to Dunedin.” Captain Hutton further reports that he commenced a reconnaisance survey of the Province on the 12th November, 1873.. He began on the northern boundary, and by the end of the present month he will have worked down from the Waitaki to the Molyneux River. He also visited the West Coast in the Luna, and learnt a great deal about the geology of that district. Next season he expects to complete the map from the Molyneux westward, and also to study more closely the auriferous gravels in the interior. When these are done he will be in a position to send in a map and report on the geology of the Province.
