MR. PYKE EXPLAINS.

To the Editor. ec^ne the triple honors which Mr G. E Barton would fain force upon me. I have already informed him that 1 am not the author of the letter which has so mightily angered him. I may now add that I know nothing ol the circumstances of the eighthours movement. And as I did not, in my capacity as a citizen, take part in the late election, 1 regard the persistent intrusion of my name into the discussion as an unwarrantable impertinence. I leave the Editor of the Mercury to answer for himself. Every sensible man in Dunedin will understand the difference, though Mr Barton may not. But think it unlikely that the Editor will reply to attacks which have appeared in other journals.

The conclusion of Mr Barton’s letter is very amusing, when one reflects on the exhib -r« n Masonic Ball, and the rabid vilification which constituted the chief feature of that entsrtainment,—l am, ic., -p, Vincent Pyke. Dunedin, April 27.
