THE PROVINCIAL SCHOLARSHIPS.
There was a special meeting of the Education Board this afternoon, to consider the examiners’ report on the above. The results were thus stated t
High School Boys.—Total marks, 1,225; 70 per cent., 857. F. Stilling, 847; W. Harper, §lB. ' <
High'and Grammar School Girls.—Total marks, 1,22g ;70 per cent., 857. Isabella Hislop, 805; J. 0. Banks, 674 ; M. Halliwell, 654 ;A. M. Burn, 613 ; B. Davies, 581; E. Sorley, 577; E, Little, 576; A. Anderson, 481 ;J. Gillies, 477. The girl Anderson, who belongs to Lawrence school, it was explained had not done the geometry papers, valued at 100, not having learned that subject.
District School Boys.—Total marks, 925 ; 70 per cent., 647. W. D. Milne, Caversham, 680 ; D. Steven, Kaitangata, 626 ; W, Armstrong, M.D., 617 ; F, Jeffcoat, Caversham, 600; R. Barnes, M.D., 530; A. Purdie, N.D., 536; F. .Naylor, M.D., 623; A. Sutherland, N.D., 493 ; H. Meeking, vVarepa, 471 ; A. M‘Lean, Waikari, 422; A. Btohr, M.D.,411; G. M‘Dermid, Sawyer’s Bay, 390 ; A Talbot, M.D., 375 ; R. The examiners recommended that a scholarship should be awarded to Stilling; the High and Grammar Schools one to Isa bella Hislop; the district school one for boys, to W. Milne la the case of the •scholarship for district school girls, they could not recommend that any scholarships should be awarded, the highest having made only 62.6 of the total number of obtainable marks. They recommended that that schola v ship should be awarded instead to David Stephen ; that Jiffcoat and Armstrong have free education at the High School, and Jeffrey be entitled to the same privilege if the scholarship be not transferred to him as recommended.
The Board decided to award the scholarship to Milne, and postponed for a week a decision on the other pending a report as to the manner in which marks were given for the different subjects.
