_ m . Blenheim, April 7. The Tuamarina Hotel was burnt down at midnight. The cause is believed to be from a fire having been left smouldering on a hearth. 16 total loss is LBBO. The landlord was owner of the house, and was insured for L 460 in the New Zealand Company. The population of Marlborough is 6,143, being an increase of 908 since 1871. Auckland, April 7. A fatal accident has taken place. Four cadets were out shooting, when Joseph Garty tripped over the rifle of another boy, who was shot through the breast, and died immediately. . The boy is nephew to Dr Baynton. His father is away in the south, ' , Invercargill, April 7. At the sale of pastoral leases the different lots were eagerly competed for. Run 449, of 20,000 acres, estimated to' carry a thousand sheep, which was put up at an upset of Lll 13s 4d, realized LlO3, Run 450, of -5,000 acres, estimated to carry 450 sheep, upset LlO 8s 4d, realized L 460. Run 452, 19,400 acres, estimated to carry 1,600 sheep, upset L4O 8s 4d, realized Ll7B. Run 453, 19,500 acres, estimated to carry 700 sheep, upset L4O 12s 6d, realized L 67. The above is the bonus for a ten years’ lease, the amount of rent being 7d for sheep, and 3s 6d per head of cattle. *- ■' Christchurch, April 7. , The polling for the election of three out of five candidates to represent Heathcote in the Provincial Council caused great interest. Mr Montgomery, president of the Executive Council, Mr Fisher, a former member, Sir Cracroft Wilson, and Dr Foster were the favorites, they supporting secular education, and the Hon. E. W. Stafford, M.H.R., supporting dcnominationalism. Notwithstanding that it was Easter Monday and a public holiday, large numbers of electors polled, the result being Montgomery, 483 ; Fisher, 315 : Wilson, 230; i>r Forster, 221; Stafford, 163. mi . April 7. There are floods in the rivers, owing to the nor’-wester on Sunday. Yesterday, at Rakaia, the southern approach of the railway bridge was injured, but not enough to stop traffic. At Rangitoto north, the. approach to the bridge was carried away. There was a flood in the Waimakariri last night. The town is badly flooded, and a portion.; of the protective erabankment has been washed away, also a portion of the railway line, suspending traffic until repairs are effected. Owing to telegraphic communication with Kaiapoi being stopped, no particulars of damage are to hand, but it is anticipated the losses'in -town and farms in the country will be considerable.
