The town is badly flooded, and a portion.; of the protective erabankment has been washed away, also a portion of the railway line, suspending traffic until repairs are effected. Owing to telegraphic communication with Kaiapoi being stopped, no particulars of damage are to hand, but it is anticipated the losses'in -town and farms in the country will be considerable.
