STRIKING THE CITY RATE.

The City rate for 1874-5 was struck by the City« ouncil last evening, after a very brief discussion. It was proposed by Cr. Woodland that the rate should be Is in the £, but the majority of the Councillors thought such a rate would not produce revenue enough to meet the necessary expenditure, and the old amount of Is 3d was agreed to. The gross valuation for this year is as follows South Ward, L 29,488 ; High Ward. L 69.908 10s; Bell Ward, L 32.003 10s ; Leith Ward, L 30,984 10s ; making a total of L 152,444 10s, as against a gross valuation of L 136.144 for the year 1873. The rate for 1874 will ’.produce L 9,525, against L 8,509 obtained last year, being an increase of 12 per cent. The Town Clerk estimates the income for 1874 at 138,832 11s. This amount includes LIO.OOO, pro- ; peeds of .bonds to fbe negotiated for works in the four Wards ; Jand L 6,500, proceeds of bonds to be sold m order to pay for sewerage works lately arranged for. After the ordinary claims have been provided for, the following amdunts will be available for public works Day labor (maintenance), L 2,000; main road, LI,500; City works (allocated), LI0,000; available for further City works and road metal. L 4.301; Bell and Leith Ward sewers (under contract), 1.6,500.
