Queenstown.—-The tenders for construe tibn of the Queenstown Water works have been received by the Corporation. They are “brse in number, all from Dunedin firms, and the lowest will probably come a little under the engineer’s estimate. The Council meet on Wednesday evening next, when the offers will most likely be definitely dealt with.— Accounts from the Nevis goldfield are rather encouraging, several parties of Europeans making a good thing out of their claims. Those who have made a sufficient “rise,” contemplate taking a spell during the winter months, which are very severe in that region We are informed there is a very large area of ground at the JSeyis which has “ never bad a pick in it,” but is likely to attract a large population next summer.—Farmers this year are laying down a good deal of their land under grass. They complain of the low prices ruling for grain as. the cause of th.t action.—The Chinese are returning from different places to the Cardrona. The remuneration given them on the public works does not satisfy them.— The mystery of the bolts stolen from off the Shotover Bridge appears to have been solved. Sergeant Bulien has traced to a logical sequence, we .think, this robbery, and fortunately to the absolving of any suspicion against other parties. The action has been .apparently that? of children. Various circumstances point to this.—‘Mail.’
