WAIKOTJAITI RACES. The following are the entries for these races, which come off on the Ist April

TROTTING MATCH. A trotting match was arranged to come off this tnorning at an early hour, for L'so a-sidp, between Mr G. Dodson’s mare Modesty and Mr J. M‘Neß’s Maggie, a wellknown bookmaker backing the former to give Maggie 360 yards start in, we believe, four miles. Notwithstanding the bad weather, a good number of people assembled to witness the race, but some misunderstanding arose through the absence of the starter appointed and also with reference to a referee, and the match was consequently declared off, to thei great disappointment of those

Mr Redwood was chosen handioapper by the competitors. That gentlemen missed his first bird, but killed the remainder; Roberts, Charlett, and Rourke killed five each. Mr Redwood took first prize, and on shooting off the ties, Roberts took second, and Charlett third. Six competitors then entered for a guinea sweep, Edwards and M‘Donald taking first and second prizes respectively. A third match was won by M ‘Donald. On future occasions it would be advisable to have these gentry roped off a certain distance from the firing point, as it cannot tend to a quick, steady aim to have “three to two on the bird ” yelled in a man’s ear just when about to fire. BILLIARD MATCH. A. match at English billiards, 300 up, for L 5 a-side, was played at the Empire Hotel this afternoon, between Mr Nesbitt, a visitor from Wellington, and a player who hails from Invercargill. The latter started off with the lead, the balls breaking well for him from the start, and ho reached 106 when ■ Mr Nesbitt was only twenty-eight. The
