THE DUNEDIN RACES.
SPORTING NOTES. As the date of the race meeting approaches, interest is getting keener, and betting operations are- carried on with more spirit at the favored places of meeting of the sporting fraternity. The Cup monopolises most attention, and a large amount of business would be done in connection with it, were it not that the uncertainty attending which will the representative of the Redwood stable in this race paralyses betting to a great extent. Lurlino aud Calumny long continued to head the list, each being held in perhaps equal favor. The latter receded a point yesterday, owing to a rumor that she was not going Jjo well at exercise, and has gone furtherback to-day. Earl of Lynne, about whpm 10J to 1 was to be had a fortnight ago, is coming more into the betting, no more than 100 to 8 being laid now. He ig reported to be rapidly improving in coudi* tion, although after a gallop he sometimes bleeds at the nose. His owner has great confidence in the Earl's being fit in -time, though some of the knowing ones stigmatize him as a “rat,” if ever so fit. Templeton and Gossip are expected to arrive per Maori to-day, and the former keeps pretty firm in m ' ir befc, 5 to 1 being the longest odds offered. Tambourini and Atlas are about equally thought of, being freely backed at. evens against each other, aud short ©dds.are caken about either for a place. Some doubleevent batting has taken place, long odds being obtainable about some couples. The following is the latest state of the odds for the cup. 2 to 1 against Liirline 9to 2 „ Calumny sto 1 ~ Templeton 6to 1 „ Parawheuua 6to 1 „ Tambourini 6to 1 „ Atlas Bto I „ Spritsail 100 to 8 ~ Earl of Lynne 100 to 5 to 1 any other DOUBLE BVESTS. • r 30 to 2 against .Calumny and Mabel, for the Cup and the Publicans’ Handicap ; 30 to--2 against Lurlino and Maid of the Mill for the Cup and the Hurdle Race.
