OTAGO UNIVERSITY.

A meeting of the members of the Otago University was held on the G,,h inst. There were present—the Hon. Major Richards m, fhd Rey. Dr. Stuart (Vice-Chancellor), Mr Just joe" Chapman, the Rev. R. L. Stanford, Messrs E. B. Lafgijl; ‘A. t C. Strode, J. H. Harris, Robert Bums, and W. H.’ Cutten. The following resolutions, proposed by the Chancellor, were, after considerable discussion, carried unanimously;— “ 1. That tho Chancellor he requested to thank the representatives from the Canterbury College for the courtesy and friendly feeling evinced by the Council of that College, in initiating a conference on the subject of the proposed’affiliation tp the University of New Zealand, and appointing a deputation to represent them at the proposed meeting. ' “2. That the Council endorse the proposed conditions of affiliaton to the New Zealand University submitted for their approval by the Chancellor, and their Deputy, ivlr Harris, as recorded in the minutes of the 26th September, 1873. ■“s That a deputation, consisting of the Chancellor, Messrs Harm, and Cargill, be requested to wait on His Hopo? the Superintendent. and solicit the concnrreuoe of the Provincial Government in these conditions! “4. That, on the sanction of the Provincial Government being obtained to the above conditions, the Chancellor be requested to put himself in communication with the i General Government, in order to obtain their concurrence and assistance in civino Wal force and effect to the same. ° “ 5. That the Chancellor bo requested to place himself m communication with the Chancellor of the New Zealand University, in order to obtain their concurrence in the course proposed to be adopted in regard to tiou arrangements con templated by resolu“6. That the conditions above referred to j 6 gene r al basis of communication with be deputation from the Canterbury College; ana that, on acceptance of the same, the College and University, as an essential preliminary to affiliation, do take steps to secure a representation in the Council of the New Zealand University in proportion to population, ajpl also to secure such a standard of examination as will .do every justice to University education.” The following are the proposed conditions' of affiliation referred to in the resolutions

The Otago University to abandon its application for an Imperial Chapter, and its power to confer degrees, to affiliate colleges, and to create a Senate : in consideration of the following, viz : . *' 2. The University of Otago'retains its title, its endowments, audits powers granted to it by its own Ordinance,'excepting the powers described in the preceding clause. “3. That,' on affiliation to the New Zealand University, it receive towards its support LSOO of the L 3,000 granted by Act, without prejudice to its sharing in the revenues arising from land endowments, and without prejudice to it sharing its fellowships, scholarships, and other competitions open to affiliated institutions. ”
