WATER RATES.
To the Editor, Sir, Some two years ago the City Connell took legal advice as to whether the Waterworks Company was liable to pay city rates upon their mains laid in the streets. The opinion given-in which, if I mistake not, the City Solicitor (Mr Smith) concurred was that the company was liable not only for the current rates, but for past years. As the Council was then negotiating for the purchase of the works, the matter was flowed to lie over. Now that these negotiations are concluded, there can be no reason why the company should not at once be called upon to stump up ; and as the City Solicitor is a director of the Water Company, no doubt he would lend valuable aid in this direction. How is it, Mr Editor, we hear nothing of it? Have the Councillors forgotten all about it, or are the Corporation officials asleep?— Lam, &c., _ ' H. S. Fish, Jun. Dunedin, February 25.
