PROVINCIAL COUNCIL ELECTION.
To the Editor.. I was pleased to see in to-day ! 3 Guardian ’ that Mr C. R. Chapman, barrister and solicitor, is likely to be a candidate for the vacancy occurring through Mr Bathgate’s appointment to the Magisterial Bench! I t look upon that as one of the healthiest Signs of the times, because we shall never be Well governed until those who are thoroughly identified with the Cqlqny take part in its Government. ‘ ' ‘ “ ■ Of late Mr Chapman baa taken a very Uvily andiutelligept interpst ip pnblifi affairs; and I think the electors would be fortunate indeed if they could secure such an independent gentleman as Mr Chapman to represent them. We have too many place-hunting representatives already, and we should strive to get those who would be above suspicion. Ihere would be no danger of Mr Chapman ousting a Ministry for the sake of getting into power. The paltry salary of Provincial Solicitor would be nothing to him,—l am, &c., t Inoependent Elector. Dunedin, February 21.
