THE WATERWORKS COMPANY.

To the Editor. SIR,—We are informed by the wise man that “ there are three things that are never satisfied, yea four things which say not enough—the grave, and the barren womb, the earth that is not filled with water, aud the fire that saith not it is enough.” And J think we may fairly add the Dunedin Waterwprks Cojnpany to the above list of things tvbiclj saith not enough ; for how comes it in the face of such a favorable report lately laid befpre them admitting of a dividend of 12 per cent., which surely ought to have satisfied the most avaricious share holders, the rateable value of the citizens’ properties has increased from 10 to 20 per cent ? At least such is tbe case with tbe writer and aty tq whom he has spoken on the subject. This together, with the increase of new buildings now going on and likely to go on for some time to come, will raise the com pany’s dividend next year to something like 20 or 25 per cent. I think, Sir, it is high time the ratepayer * bestirred themselves to check such avarice. I would suggest that the Mayor should call a meeting of the citizens to consider this question, and either to authorise the City Corporation to construct new works or to go to Parliament with a monster petition to nave the powers of the company very considerably curtailed I could say a great deal more on this subject, but I forbear at present. Hoping the authorities will take immediate action, I am, &0., _ Geobdie. Dunedin, February 20.
