COLORED ISRAELITES.
In the City of Cotochin (Hindostan) and its neighborhood live nearly 2,000 colored Jews, i hey are not quite as dark-skinned as the Ethiopian negroes. They are Israel; ikes iu the full sense of the word, arid faithfully worship the God of their ancestors.* According to their own statement their origin is as follows :—The conquest of a portion of the East Indies by the Europeans opened to the commercial world the road to unlimited wealth, and the prospect of getting rich attracted adventurers from all parts of the world. Among these were many young Israelites from Bagdad, Bassora, and Yemen; who came to seek their fortune. After esf tablisbing themselves, they purchased female slaves from the natives, a number of whom married their masters after they were com verted, and from these inter-marriages the present population of Cotochin is descended. But on account of their color they are under a ban ; neither the Israelite of Bagdad nor the white Jew of their own locality will inter-marry or otherwise) associate with tneiu. j
