POSTAGE OF PERIODICALS.

To the Editor. SiR, —I have to draw attention to the excessive postage chargeable on magazines and periodicals (monthly parts). For instance, the following weigh slightly over 4oz. each, viz ‘‘Sunday Magazine,” “Leisure Hour,” “Good " ords,” “ Good Words for the Young,” “ Family Herald,” &c. ; and yet they cost 8d each to go as far as Port Chalmers, Taieri, Green Island, See. Eight shillings per year postage alone on twelve monthly parts is as much as the price of subscription of the magazine itself, i here are a great many persons who on learning the cost of postage decline to become subscribers, which materially affects the diffussion of useful knowledge. Some newspapers weigh nearly the same as periodicals, and only cost ad ; the difference of on each is considerably out of all proportion. I believe lam correct in stating that a magazine of 4oz. goes for Id through the post in Victoria. A. reduction of postage here would create an increased demand, and the amount of revenue would I believe, be more than at the present rate. Trusting this letter will have the effect of inducing the proper authorities to give the subject their-serious consideration, and not let the matter remain a dead letter—l am, &c., J B Dunedin, January 14.
