THE AUCKLAND RACES.
[By Telegram.] Auckland, January 2. At the races to-day about 800 persons were on the course. The following are the results of to-day’s racing Epsom Plate Handicap, sweepstakes of 3 soes, with 60 sovs added ; the second horse to receive 10 sots from the sakes. Histanoa, 1J mile. Kakapo, Bst 31b ' - - . . . i Slander, Bst 101b - . ‘ . . 9 + Black Eagle,' dsfc - . . . - 3 + The judge was unable to decide which was second horse. Atalanta and Batter also ran. Ihe betting was even between Slander and Kakapo. ihe greatest excitement prevailed, the race being the finest of the meeting. At the start Atalanta got off best, Slander was second, and Kakapo last but one till rounding the turn, when he came through and assumed a more forward position. In the straight. Slander, Atalanta, and Kakapo were all of a heap, the scouting being tremendous. Atalanta held the * j tti a PP roac hing the dip, when Slander J> a kapo came up ; the latter when out of the dip rushed to the front. Black Eagle here came with a rush, but could not quite catch Kakapo, who won by three parts of a length. The Auckland Plate, 100 sovs; entrance, 10 sovs j weight for age, Distance, 21 »lJes. 1

Mr Walter’s Yatterina, aged, Bst 111b - . 1 Mr Watt’s Parawhenua, 4 yrs, Sat 61b - - 2 Mr W. Walter’s Slander, aged, 9st - .3 Mr Watt’s Never Miss, 4 yrs, 7st 41b, and Mr Young’s Bedouin, 3 yrs, 6st, also ran. It was a splendid race between Yatterina and Parawhenua, who ran neck and neck, alternately getting an advantage. The Thames Plate, 60 sovs; distance, 2 miles. Papapa, 7st 51b - .... .1 Hatred, 9st -2 Calumny, Bst 111b- - - . - . 3 Won easily by a length. Selling Race, 60bovb.
