Wellington, January 2. The Government have arranged for the Taranaki to collect the letters for the next mail via San Francisco. The mail will leave Port Chalmers on the 13th instant; Wellington on the 15th instant, arriving at the Manuka on the 19th instant. In consequence of the strike and the high price of coal, the cost of passage and freight by the steamers has been raised 20 per cent. A ship has been signalled; supposed to be the Oelrano, from London. Christchurch, January 2. The Lyttelton Regatta yesterday was a great success. The champion sailing race was won by the Sarah and Mary. The yacht race was won by Mr Day’s Emma, late Blue Jacket. m, , ■ Napier, January 2. The pah at Waikiki, eight miles from Napier, has been burnt down and everything destroyed. Chief Justice Amey gave an important decision in the case of M‘Arthur Snera v. M'Kellar, Collector of Customs, in which Mr Prendergast appeared as counsel for the defendant. The action was brought to recover restitution money exacted after the passing of the new tariff on goods for which sight entry had been previously passed. The Chief Justice decided that the importation of dutiable goods is completed by passing all appointed entries, rather than by the time when the ship arrived ; and that the entry for home consumption is not passed until the entry is perfected and signed by the Collector. Judgment was given for defendant, with costs. 8 Invercargill, January 2. In the cricket match Invercargill v. 'Dunedin, the latter team won with one wicket to spare.
