SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

THE AUCKLAND RACES. (By Telegraph.) (from our own correspondent. ) Ellerslie, December 26. The Turf Club’s races commenced to-day. Beautiful weather and a good attendance were the features. Kakapo being an absentee destroyed much interest. The Trial Stakes, from the start, was a gift to Batter, the rest lacking quality and condition. The next event, the Kailway Plate, was a walk over for Calumny. The Turf Club’s Cup was a good race. Parawhenua, a raking colt, tied Kedwood’s Papapa, making the running for Yatterina, which ran very well, and but for being ridden by a strange jockey, would have made it a closer race. Hatred was short of work, and Black Eagle quite outpaced. The rest of the events do not require comment. The course is very hard, but the Club has erected a magnificent stand. Mr Bed wood has bought ms team back from Mr Perkins, but it is doubtful whether Kakapo will be allowed to start for the second meeting. I cannot send the probable winners for to-morrow, as the handicaps are not yet out. The following is the detailed account of the races : Trial Stakes, of 50 sovs ; 1| miles. Mr Perkins’s Batter . i Mr Golden Crown - ... 2 Betting : 6 to lon Batter; any odds against the rest. All the horses got well away to a good start, Eclipse going to the front, Golden Crown and Batter laying close together, Batter pulling double, and Hero last. After about three quarters of a mile had been traversed, Batter went to the front, kept her lead to the finish, and won by a couple of lengths, hard held. Time, 2min. 3^secs. Railway Plate, of sovs: } mile. Mr Watt’s Calumny - . . j Mr Sultan 2 Mr Walters’s Slander .... 3 Kakapo and Mira were scratched for this event. Betting ;20to lon Calumny. The two got well away together, the favorite laying behind until coming into the straight, when Ray let her go, and won easily. Time, Imin. 21£secs. Auckland Turf Club Cup, of 200 sovs, Mr Perkins’s Papapa • - - - 1 Mr Walters’s Yatteriua - .0 Mr Watts’s Parawhenua -.1.3 Mr Campbell’s Hatred ~ . . . q Mr fStamlish’a Black Eagle . . . 0 The horses were sent awav to a flying start, Yatterina having a lot the best of it, with Parawhenua second, Papapa losing four or hve lengths. After they had gone 200 or 300 yards Parawhenua rushed to the front forcing the pace very fast for his stable companion Hatred, who was laying third. No alteration took place until they bad gone about one mile and a-balf, when Black Eagle was obviously out of the race. Papapa now began to go through his horses, and got on terms with Yatterina, Parawhenua being still m charge of affairs. At the top turn Papapa challenged Parawhenua. Walters’s mare made her effort at the same time. The three horses then raced together for a few strides, when Mr Watt’s colt dropped back beaten. A fine struggle between the two favorites ensued, the Derby colt winning by about a length one of the fastest races ever run in Auckland. Tune, 4& secs - Retting • 3 to 1 on Papapa j 2 to 1 on Hatred ; even on Yatterina ; 10 to I or Black Eagle ; 2 to 1 on Parawhenua,

Drapers’ Purse, of 50 aovs. Mr Watts’s Calumny - - - - 1 Mr Watts’s Never Miss - - - • 2 This race was reduced to a walk over for Mr Watts’s pair, wlun lie declared to win with Calumny, and the pair cantered round. Prince of Wales Stakes, of 40 sovs. Bunderra * Mira 2 Betting :2to 1 agst Bunderra. The two ran together for about three quarters of a mile, when the favorite dropped back beaten, and Bunderra cantered in a winner by a couple of lengths.
