Grahamstown, December 26-To-day was observed as a general holiday. Sports—foot and horse races—were the attraction. Crowds went by every train, and two were constantly running. Several thousand people went out on excursions. It is reported here that Major Cooper has received instructions to recruit a company of Volunteers end Militia for service in the Waikato, road-rraking. Others say that the company’s destination is Ohinemuri, to receive the invading miners. Recruiting has been begun, but the business is invested with considerable mystery. Auckland, Dec. 27. The Good Templars held a demonstration yesterday in conjunction with the Thames members and lodges. It was the largest temperance gathering ever seen in Auckland; 1350 teetotallers marched in procession. Alixandba, December 27. Several hundred people were at the races yesterday. Tu Tawhiao, the King’s son, with Wetere, the principal Kawhia chief, and a number of Hauhau priests, is now at Kawhia, Christchurch, December 27. The Oddfellows’ procession and fete yesterday was a great success. Three thousand people were present. The Provincial Council will re-assemble after the Christmas recess on Tuesday next, when the debate on the railway management will be taken. It is generally believed that the Government will be ousted by two or three votes.
