Stafford was a passenger by the Albion, The attempt to form a rival gas company is not successful. _ The annual performance of the “ Messiah, ’ last night, by the Choral Society, was a great success. 150 performers took part in the work, and 1,000 persons were present. The choruses, solos, and orchestra were all excellent. The Government are taking proceedings against the Natives who created a disturbance at Horowhenua. Auckland, December 24. The charge against the doctor of the Chile is still proceeding. The witnesses for the defence testify to the violent character of Mrs Veasey, the complainant, and state that a tarpaulin was spread over on deck when the heat became intense. Further evidence is coming. Tauranga, December 24. The Native Minister left by the Luna for for Napier, via Poverty Bay, at midnight.
