THE COLONIAL PRIZE FIRING. The first squad of the North Dunedin Rifle Volunteers competed at the I‘clichct Bav Range this morning. Lieut. The Port Chalmers Naval Brigade fired for company representatives this morning. The weather was beautifully fine. Three men having fired, the competition was postponed. Their scores were—Lieut. Wilson, 87 ; Captain Goldie, 77 ; Volunteer S. Lean, 67. The competition by the City Guards for selection of company's representatives, announced to take place to-day, has been adjourned till Friday morning. The firing for choice of representatives by No. 1 Company (Oamaru Rangers) to«k place on Saturday morning. 20th inst., at the range, Limekiln Gully, under the superintendence of Lieut. Diehl, No. 3 (Otepopo) Company. Only two competitors appeared, owing to the fact that the Colonial tiring taking place this year at Napier, the members of the company generally would, even if successful, have been unable to proceed that distance. The morning was not a favorable one, and the scores were poor. The ranges were 200, 400, 500, and 600 yards ; seven shots at each. The scores made were -Sergt. King, 74; Private A- Y. Smith, 70. The minimum score being 80, No. 1 is unrepresented.
