Auckland, December 18. In the Council to-day Mr Sheehan stated that the Superintendent had been offered a steamer to ply to Poverty Bay for LI,OOO subsidy The service will soon start. 'The charge against Dr Croughty, of the ship Chile, is now proceeding. Mrs Vessey accused the defendant of the most brutal treatment. She fainted while being put in irons, and the doctor and mate only laughed when she recovered. The doctor, in reply to the mate, said, “ Up with her; I’ll hang her to the capstan.” It was the hottest day on the voyage when that occurred. She was fastened up all day with her feet off the deck. Her husband brought several pillows to ease her. The captain said, “ Fur Heaven’s sake, throw something over that woman, she’ll die there.” She was allowed no food the day she was hung up. About dark the mates took her down, but did not take off the irons; they put her in a solitary cell 1 and the doctor would not allow anyone to bring her water. The case is not concluded. At half-past nine last night the Wanganui steamer was found to be on fire ; smoke was seen rising from the engine-room skylight. After twenty minutes’ hard work the flames were got under. The officers’ quarters, engine room, and poop deck were charred, but the engines are apparently undamaged. She steamed for Riverton this morning at seven. Captain, \l‘Leau, of the-Albion, his officers and men, also those of the Bebingtou, rendered valuable assistance. Ltttelton, December 19. Mr Adam Chalmers was re-elected Mayor yesterday.
