POST AND TELEGRAPH OFFICE AT THE WATER OF LEITH.
The following letter from the Premier to the Mayor was read at yesterday’s City Council meeting :~ General Government Office, Dunedin, December 17, 1873, Sir, Representations have been made to me concerning the want of post-office accommodation at the north-end of the City. I propose making arrangements at once, ho that the receiving boxes between the head office and the Water of Leith may be used for posting newspaper*) ; and I will cause those boxes to bo cleared more frequently than at present. But the City is being extended so much that I am inclined to erectabranch post-office within the City boundaries, but as conveniently situated as possible for the residents at the Water of Leith. I have no doubt that such an office would be a great postal convenience, and it would be an advantage to have in connection with it a branch of the Post Office Savings Bank and of the Electric Telegraph. The object of this letter is to ask whether the City ('ouncil will grant a site to enable sUch a building as I have indicated to be erected ; for it would be obviously improper that the General Government should have to purchase laud for such a purpose. I think that a site near the North Recreation Ground would be very suitable. --I am, &c., Julius Vogel. In moving that the letter be referred to the Reserves Committee, Cr. Barnes said he was proud to think the Premier took such an interest in Dunedin. The Council should be dad to grant a piece of ground for such an excellent purpose as that suggested by Mr Vogel He thought the Chinamen’s plot, or a small section of the Caledonian Grounds, would afford a suitable site. There was no doubt it would be a public benefit.
