Melbourne, December 11. There was a miners’ riot at Clunts. The Lothair Company refused the small concession demanded, and proceeded to bring Chinese labor from Ballarat. A thousand miners, armed with pick-handles, erected a barricade at the toll-gate outside the town. When the coaches containing the Chinese, guarded by the mounted and foot police, appeared, the men at the barricade saluted them with a volley of stones. The police behaved gallantly, trying to storm the barricade, but the miners, assisted by their wfves, obstinately opposed them, and the police retreated, escorting the Chinamen and coaches back to Ballarat. The miners had a conference with the mine owners subsequently, am i an amicable arrangement is likely to be made. Meanwhile a large body of armed police has been sent to Chines. The weather was unusually hot yesterday ; 97deg. in tho shade. Eighteen of Victoria will meet the English eleven. There hare been more murders and suicides during the past week than were ever before known in the same period. Sydney. The Hon Cr. W. Allen has been appointed Minister of Justice.
