THE INTERPROVINCIAL CRICKET MATCH.
(By Telegraph.) Christchrch, November 18, This morning was fine, a light breeze from south-east. The ground was rather dead. Canterbury won the toss, and sent Auckland in. E. Fowlor, for Canterbury, took the wicket; A. J. Cotterill, long stop ; H. Cotterill, short leg ; Dickenson, third man and bowler ; Fuller, third man and bowler ; Barker, slip ; J. Fowler, mid-on ; Maples, point; Ollivier long leg and cover ; Loughnan, long leg and cover ; (Jorfe, mid-off. Dixon, umpire for Auckland ; Souter for Canterbury. Dufaux is a good bat, with good defence. Mumford is also a good bat. Fuller commenced bowling not quite up to his usual mark. Dufaux was soon run out for three. First wicket, 5 runs. Alpe came next. He is a stubborn bat, and made a long stand. After scoring 2, Mumford was splendidly caught at the wicket by Fowler from a ball off Dickenson. 2 for 5. Bellars came next. He plays with great style, but was bowled by Dickenson after scoring only 2 ; Alpe meanwhile scoring steadily. 3 for 12. Yates was the next. Ho is a good bat, and has a free style. Alpe and Yates made a long stand, getting runs slowly by I’s and 2’s. Yates then drove Dickenson to the on for 3. At this juncture the bowling was steady, but tame. Yates was at length given out leg before wicket after scoring nine. 4 for 32. Clayforth, who succeeded Yates, is a fair bat, and plays forward. Alpe, after scoring 17, was caught by Dickenson at third man, off Fuller. 5 for 33. Robinson (the captain) was the next in. He is a capital bat, with a good defence, and hits well, Robinson scored two singles, and Clayforth made two forward drives from Dickenson for two each. Clayforth also made a two and a single to leg from Dickenson, and was then clean howled by Fuller, after scoring seven. (i for 14. Sweet was the next man. 11c is a very free hitter, and soon drove Dickenson for two, then again for two, and then for four. After some alteration in the field Sweet was bowled by Fuller for ten. 7 fur (id. Cotton came next. He is rather a wild bat, but a fair player. The two made a few runs, when Dickenson was taken off, and Fowlor succeeded him. Robinson was caught by Maples at point, off Fowler. 8 for 0(3. Buckland, who was the next man, is only a moderate bat. Cotton and Buckland were scoring rather freely when Buckland was run out in attempting a bye. 1) for 83. L: m'cham was last man. He is only a medium bat, ami was soon bowled by Fuller, Cotton carrying out his bat for 14. The total of the innings was 00. The players then adjourned to lunch. After lunch, the attendance, which had been meagre, increased slightly, and the Governor and party arrived. The Auckland men took the field. Bellars kept wicket very well; Alpe was longstop, Clayforth point, Lankham slip, Mumford third man, Yates long slip ami long leg, Hweet cover point, Cotton mid-off, Buckland and Robinson bowlers and short leg. Of those, Robinson, Mumford, AlpO, Beilars, Yates, Clayforth, Sweet, and Cotton, were v«ry good in the Held; Buckland, Lankham, and Dufaux, were only moderate. Ollivier and A. J. Cotterill cornmencud the batting for Canterbury, Robinson bowling to the former. He howls left-handed, round arm and is very good, rather over medium pace and straight. Cotterill scored very fast, nmki„o .splendid plav. Sweet is a very swift round arm bowler. He bowled in place of Muokland. Cotterill, after a fine inningsof 20, was caught from a skier, 1 for 24. H. Cotterill succeeded his brother. After a fine hit for four by Olhvier, H. ('otlerill was bowled by Sweet. 2 for 28. Corfe joined Ollivier, who was after Heaa bowled by Sweet. J for JO. F, Fowler
came next. Sweet changed ends, and then bowled Corfc with his first ball. 4 for 39. Maples followed, and was caught by Sweet at third man. 5 for 43. Parker was the next to hat. He soon lost his partner, E. Fowler, who was howled beautifully by Robinson. G for 41. J. Fowler joined Barker, who scored steadily against Sweet. Powder was at length caught well by Lankham, at short slip. 7 for 43. Dickenson came next. The rain, which came on soon after dinner, stopped the match at halt-past five, when the Canterbury men had made 53, with three wickets to fall. The match will be resumed to-morrow. The chances are about even, but the betting is rather in favor of Canterbury, though Sweet’s bowling is very destructive. King and Dixon, the twelfth and thirteenth (emergency) Auckland men, are average bats and fair fields.
