Wellington, November 7. Sir James and Lady Fergusson go to Canterbury for the races, per p.s. Luna. The sports in connection with Fox and G rims tone promise to be successful. Betting slightly in lavor of Grimstoue. An influential meeting of merchants was held to-day to consider the question of forming a sugar refinery ; the proposed capital to be LIOO,OOO. Provisional directors were appointed to obtain information on the subject, and, should they deem it desirable, to form and register the company. November 8. The Opposition have defeated the Provincial Government on the Loan Appropriation Bill for Public Works, and thrown out the Bill, at a thin attendance of members, by a majority of three. Both papers condemn the action of the Opposition as utterly factious, and say if Wellington presents another Loan Bill to the Assembly its chance of passing will be small indeed. The Provincial Executive resigned this morning, having refused to accept Mr Pharazyn’s endeavors to introduce a motion to the effect that the Council would favorably consider an Appropriation Act for L 50,000. The discussion was cut short by the Superintendent proroguing. Auckland, November 7. Six Star carrier pigeons returned this morning, bringing returns from the northern districts, including Matakana, Malmrangi, Wade, and Helensville; also from Raglan. Most of the districts give a majority for Dargavillc. This is counterbalanced by the returns from the South, including Papakura, Uowick, Drury, and other pensioner settlements, which give the result at present thus: Williamson, 2,534; Dargaville, 2,056; Lusk, 1,246. Mr Alexander Saunders reports Buyers, National Bank of xNew Zealand, L2 8s ; Bright Smile, L 6 5s ; Watchman, 8s 6d; Bank of New ZeTand, Ll6 2s 6d. Sellers, National Insurance Company, LI 9s ; Union Beach, LI 6s 6d. November 8, Another Star pigeon express arrived this morning. The returns up to the present give Mr Williamson a majority of 608, the numbers being Williamson 2,675 Dargaville 2,067 Lusk 1,344 Opotiki, November 8. The residents here were almost unanimous in favor of Mr Dargaville. Nelson, November 7. Mr O’Conor addressed the electors in town last night re the Superinten dency election. There were 600 persons present. On a vote of confidence being proposed there was a show of 50 hands in favor of the resolution, and a few against it. The proposition, however, was carried. Christchurch, November 7. The Luna, with the Governor’s carriage and horses, has arrived. The Governor will arrive here on Monday next. At the inquest held on the body of Captain Harding, the jury returned a verdict of “ Found drowned, ’ and also attached a rider drawing the attention of the authorities to the unprotected state of the wharf, and the conduct of masters of vessels in not providing lights at night or suitable gangways for the safety of passengers. November 8. The Governor hold a levee at the Provincial Council Chamber on Tuesday. * Ihe sweeps drawn last night at Tattersall’s show a slight alteration in the value of horses for the Canterbury Cup, In a sweep of the value of LI 18 15s, Lurline fetched. On being told the name of the distinguished Russian, John Day was obliged to turn aside in order to repress a smile, which respect for royalty forbade him to indulge openly. “ What are you laughing at, John?” asked the Prince. “ I was only thinking, your Highness, that if his name is the Cesarevitch, his missus’s ought to be the Cambridgeshire.”
