CRYPTOGRAPHY.

To the Editor. Sir,—ln your issue of Saturday last you kindly inserted a cypher communication I took the liberty of forwarding jou 5 at the lame time I promised, if no one in Dunedin would or could unravel the mysterious paragraph, to gend you my interpretation and method of working it. That day week, viz., to-day, as no notification to the contrary has appeared in your co'umns, I will, with your kind permission, do so now. The cypher as it appeared in the London Times of January last and the Evkning Star of the 11th inst., was as follows : 3J9M iIRFMI D OFQJ OWDJ3 9QG KFKF BNGQ ITO MJGIIY HFHbl' AW9SF 953 SFMWT 9WI 9L9NI, XO HJ D RNGQ MJ3JIR H3 KWJRDXI KWIU9WI i9iW3YCNIL ATM HTIW3 IJSY. J. lIRFNI D 9R GJ99DSB 90G OM9Y DX IJ9W OT HJ ATMTTP CTR TTP JZBMO OY HJ TTPWN ATM I9IW AW9SSJN. To show tbe various methods I adopted before arriving at a solution of this complicated subject, I find, would occupy too much of your valuable time and space. Suffice it then to say that, after a groat deal of time and trouble, seeing the kind of cypher I had to deal with, I took the "953" in the cypher for the conjunction "and," and by working it accordingly arrircd at the meaning of the n}es»age, viz. : !! Dear Edward—l have tried all; papa will noj; rele'nf ;"rnarr(ma, Frank, and Carry are against me. I Tvill redeem my promise.; pro- ?' are everything for Monday next.' G, Edward, am leaving all that is dear to me for you. How you ought to lqve me.—Yours for ever, - *» Frances." Th& key to the cypher is the first, *nd every ethor letter of each word the fifth forward, the seoond and every other letter tbe fifth back, the letters AB 0 D E in the backward and forward reckoning counting as 975 3 1 respectively. By working ac cording to this clue, tho interpretation 1 have given wiil be arrived at. Why some of the figures are dotted and others not I cannot. understand, but that the dots are immaterial is evident from the fact that they do not affect the meaning. I may add that, with the exception of two or three mistakes, and lbs word -'lpve'' being omitted altogether, the pypher, on examination, will be found to be a true and correct one. As regards Mr Frank Mitchell's puzzle, which appeared in your Monday's issue, I would remark that in point of complicatedness it is not a thousandth part so difficult as the one herein given. To any who may feel an interest in it, however, the key will be found by reversing the alphabet. Thanking you, sir, for your kindness on this and previous occasions, and promising not to trouble you again, I am, Ac , Henry Lynch, Jun , Bellringers' Troupe. Dunedin, October 18.
