CITY POLICE COURT.
Friday, October 3. (Before His Worship the Mayor and J. Black, Esq., J.P..) Drunkenness.— Charles Paterson, Wm. Alexander, and John M‘Donald were each fined ss, with the usual alternative. Fighting. William Hagarty, charged with committing a breach of the peace by fighting in Princes street, was fined 20s, or in default forty-eight hours’ imprisonment with hard labor. Theft. John Gough was charged with stealing one bottle of whi-ky of the value of 4s, one half-crown, and two shillings, the property of Peter M’Laren, proprietor of the Star Hotel, Brighton, Accused pleaded guilty, attributing the offence to his being under the influence of drink.—Mr Black said it appeared that he had been twice sentenced at the Supreme Court, having received two years’ imprisonment with hard labor for horse-stealing, and a further term of twelve months for larceny. He was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with hard labor on the present charge. Assault.— l£llen Bourke v. Alfred Powell was a charge of assault. Defendant pleaded guilty, but said he strucK her in self-defence, The charge was dismissed, as complainant did not put in an appearance.
