THE ANNUAL HORSE SHOW.
The twelfth annual show of horses was held to-day at the Provincial Pale Yards of Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. _ Very great improvements have been made in this yard. The unsightly buildings and stalls formerly on the right hand side have been removed, the yard has been carefully levelled and metalled, and upon the metal a thick bed of tanner’s bark has been placed, so that in addition to the space gained, an elastic covering, free from slush and sloppiuess, affords very suitable ground for trying the paces of horses without injury to their feet. The roof, which is of immense space, has been strengthened and whitewashed, and an elegant arch, spanning the entrance to the covered yard, extends from the bar on the left to the opposite boundary. We may safely say there is not in the Colonies so suitable a sale yard, of equal extent, so well sheltered and paved. ... ~ The first show and sale since the alterations were made to-day. Mr Milner, on entering the box observed that it was not for the purpose of awarding prizes that the show 'was held, but in order to afford an ppportunity to those present of judging for themselves of the different animals that would pass before them. He therefore should only read out their names and pedigrees as they walked paet, for ho d}d not
consider it within the province of an auctioneer on such an occasion to say anything as to the comparative merits of the horses. We may observe that the cart stock shown comprised remarkably fine animals—full of bone, sinew, and muscle. We have seldom seen horses so uniformly good. They were mainly Clydesdale and .Suffolk horses. There was very little choice of blood stock, only a few of this class being on show, As for backs, there was not one, thoroughbreds and the heavy draught horses alone being exhibited. Several horses were offered for sale, but there was a disinclination to bid, and many were passed in. The following are the names of the horses exhibited, with the prices realised by those that were offered at auction -Mr John Duncan’s “ Sir William,” 105 guineas (Mr M'Anley) ; Mr Trestrail’s “Young Beaufort,” 205 guineas (Mr John Robertson); Mr J.
