MINISTERIAL ALLOWANCES.
A return was laid upon the table of the House of Representatives a few days ago, in accordance with an order of the House upon the motion of Mr W, Johnston, “ showing all the travelling allowances, residence allowances, house allowances, and other allowances leceived by Ministers during each of the four years ended 30th June, 1873* find the sources from which such allowances were paid, and, in connection with the travelling allowances, the nature of the service and the period during which it was performed. ” This return shows that during the financial year 1869-70 the amount of allowances drawn by each Minister was as follows Hon. W. Fox, travelling allowance, L 263 ; Hon. W. Gisborne, travelling allowance, L 43, and rent allowance, L 149 ; Hon. D. M ‘Lean, travelling allowance, L 583 ; Hon, I. E. Eeathci - ston, mission to Melbourne, L 125 ; Hon. F. D. Bell, travelling allowance, L 72. During the year 1870-1 the allowances were as follow : -Hon. VV. Fox, travelling allowance, LS4; Hon. J, Vogel, ditto, L 18 0; Hon W, Gisborne, ditto, LlOl, and rent allowance, Ll5O ; Hon. D. M'Lean, travelling allowance, L3ll, and rent allowance, LS7 ; Hon. Henry Sewell, travelling allowance.’ L 53, and rent allowance, L 45 ; Hon. I. E. Featherston, travelling allowance (mission to England), L 1,777 ; Hon. I*. D. Bell (ditto), L 1,860. For the financial year 1871-2, the allowances were:—Hon. W. P'ox, travelling allowance, LIO2 ; Hon. J. VoVel (ditto), L3.0C2 (composed as follows : -Mission to 'England, L 2,224; mission to Australia, LSG7 ; in Wellington L 271) ; Hon. D. M'Lean, travelling allowance, 1 514, rent allowance, L 225 ; Hon. F. D. Bell, rent allowance, E75 ; Hon. W. Gisborne, rent allowance, LloO, travelling a’lowance, L 4; Hon. W. Beeves, travelling allowance, L 236 ; Hon. Mr Ormond, travelling allowance, Ll3l. Total for the year. L4.5G1 The total amount of allowances to Ministers was L1,G30, made up as follows Hon. J. Vogel, travelling allowance, L 44 6; Hon. T). M'Lean (ditto). L 195, rent allowance, LI 10; Hon. W. H. Reynolds, travelling allowance (conference in Sidney), L 394,' other travelling expenses, 1,7, and rent allowance, LlO2 ; Hon, Wi Parata, travelling allowance, L 75 ; Hon. J. Bathgate (ditto), Ll6, and rent allowance, LIOS ; Hon. F. I). Bell, rent allowance. LCO; Hon. H. J. Millar (ditto), Ll7 ; Hon. J. Hall (ditto), L2S; Hon. H. Sewell (ditto), Ll2; Hon. E. W. Stafford (ditto), Ll2; Hon. T. B. Gillies, Ll2; Hon. O. Curtis (ditto), Ll2 ; Hon. W. Fitzherbert (ditto), Ll2 ; Hon. G. M, O’llorke (ditto), L7B, and travelling allowance, L 6 ; Hon. Dr. Pollen, rent allowance, L 8 ; Hon. J. D. Ormond, travelling allowance, L 217 ; Hon. D. Reid (ditto), LGS; Hon. E, Richardson (ditto), L2OG, and rent allowance, L9O ; Hon. W. Reeves, travelling allowance, L 157. The total amount of allowances during the four years is L 13.517.
