Auckland, September 19. Mr Fairclough, the tragedian, in conjunction with his agent, tweaked the nose of Mr Drury, reporter for the Cross, on account of an adverse criticism. Summonses have been taken out. Christchurch, September 20. The Waste Lands sales this week amount to L 6.004. Four hundred and thirty applications have been received for the National Insurance Company’s shares, representing 45,000 applied for up to the present. It is expected that the total list here will reach 55,000. Tha deaths among the Punjaub’s passengers were principally children, and mostly amongst the Danish passengers. One adult died this morning. The ship is now in quarantine. Six hundred and forty-three shares have been applied for in the Lyttelton Gas Company. Mr W. Montgomery, late chairman of the Board of Education, has been elected, without opposition, member of the Provincial Council, in the room of Mr A. Duncan, resigned. In his speech he said he is in favor of a property tax for education purposes, but thought household rating the best that could be devised in the present circumstances.
The match, Harris v. Fox, takes place to-day. The weather is gloriously fine.
Wbstport, September 20. The Municipal Council have determined to petition for the enforcement of the Public Works contractors paying their wages promptly. The public express great. annoyance at Mr Beet ham’s action re the Ngakawau Railway. The Bailer River is still encroaching on Westport, and delay will only increase the cost of protective works. The prospectus of the Buller Coal Company will shortly be issued. The locality of the operations is between Ngakawau and Waimangawa. Queenstown, September 20. Mining matters this week have improved. The public opinion here is dead against the Upper House throwing out the Provincial Loans Bill, but about the expediency of a dissolution opinion is divided. The rumored discovery of a new goldfield towards Milford Sound is not authenticated.
