Auckland, September 13, The papers comment favorably upon Mr Russell’s mail contract. The journals infer that Auckland will be the first port of call in the Colony, and the last port of departure. Good Templarism is spreading rapidly both in Auckland and at the Thames. New lodges are being opened, and large numbers of members are joining them. Mr Saunders reports buyers of South British Insurance shares at L2 ss, Caledonian do. at Ll3 ss, and National Bank do. at LI 15s. Queenstown, September 13. The case of G. B. Barton v. Grace, a claim for L 760 commission on the sale of the Shotover claim was, after six days’ trial, dismissed, with L 52 costs. Notice of appeal was given. Great opposition is displayed by the majority of the town people against the purchase from the Athenreum Company of the Town Hall building. The Council is equally divided on the subject, and has adjourned for a fortnight. Several attempts are being made to form mining companies. The tendency is to overdo things. News from the Shotover Company s claim is not favorable for working operations. Christchurch, September 15. The meeting of farmers, convened by the .promoters of the Early Closing Movement, did not take place, the fanners evidently not taking sufficient interest to attend. “ *■ ■■The match Harris v. Mr Thomas Watson, the well-known diver, was reported to have died in Cassius’s shaft, at Ross ; but the report is not true.^ At the annual meeting of the United Canterbury Cricket Club a resolution was pas ed that the Inter provincial match with Otago be played as late in the season as possible. The annual entire horse show takes place on the 27th instant, and is expected to be a great success, as a large number of animals has been imported during the year. It is likely that Canterbury will send representatives to Melbourne to compete for the Victorian Rifle Association prizes. Seven hundred shares have been taken up in tho New Saleyards Company.
