The amount of revenue received at the Cus-tom-house on goods cleared, for consumption this day, was L 387 Os sd. . The amount of gold duty received at the Custom House to-day was L 439 11s 2d, being duty at the rate of 2s per or collected on 4 3950z 12dwt shipped by the s.s. Beautiful Star for Lyttelton, thence to be transhipped to the Jubilee, for London. Although the Tariff Bill has passed the House of Representatives, the maricetis still unsettled. It was expected that the large sale of grocery goods ana oilmen’s stores at Messrs M‘Landress, Hepburn, and Co.’s rooms on Friday, would have fixed quotations ; but the trade generally were not prepared to give advances, and many of the articles were retired, waiting higher prices. The remnant of the Foldin’s cargo of teas was offered, and several lines were disposed of at a slight decline on former rates. Sugars remain scarce. The balance of the Hadda’s cargo was brought forward, but buyers were cautious and disinclined to give the reserve prices. Spirits and wines were in better demand, and buyers were found at fair prices. Exahaw’s brandy in case realised 25s 6d, and Bisquit’s pale reached full rates. Bith Ross’s Campbeltown whisky fetched 4s 9d, and Glen Grant 5s 4d. Of wines a parcel of St.Tulien claret was sold at 11s, In general merchandise the demand was good for the season. Candied peel fetched Is 2}d. Keiler’s jujubes Is 2d. Macaroni lid. Vinegar in case 9s Gd. Currants We omitted to state that Lowndes’s rum sold at 3s od, and for a parcel of very superior F. W. P. 4s was offered and refused. With the exception of sugar, there is nothing particularly noteworthy; but, as we stated last week, the supply of sugars is short, and they are held for higher prices. It would be difficult to give quotations of many articles affected by the tariff. Time and demand alone can settle prices. A. Mercer reports for the week ending August 16, retail prices only Fresh butter, in i and 1 lb. prints, best quality, is ( Jd to Is lOd per lb.; second quality, Is Sd to Is 9d per lb. Fresh butter, in lumps, Is Gd to Is 8d per lb.; powdered and salt butter, Is 4d per lb. First-class salt butter, in kegs, is worth Is 2d per lb. ; second quality, Is to Is Id per lb, but not much in demand, and stocks are heavy. Fresh butter still continues scarce, and unless the supply increases, a further rise may be expected. Stock of cheese is mostly in retailers’ hands, and for good samples, Is per lb. Side and rolled bacon, 9d to 10d per lb. Colonial hams, Is to Is 2d per lb. English hams, Is 8d per lb. Eggs are very scarce, and selling at la 8d per dozen.

Melbourne, August 9.—Flour at auction sales has been disposed of up to Ll3 10s. The market is depressed. Wheat is scarce; sales at 6s 6d. Oats, 5s 4d to 5s lOd ; firm. Mauritius advices report a rise in sugars ; sales here are firmer. Hennessy’s case brandy, LI 7s 3d. Dividends : Southern Insurance, 7a ; Australasian, 10; National, 8 ; Melbourne ami Hobson’s Bay Kail way Company, 6 ; Bank of Victoria, 10. Of Tookeys, all issues are quoted at Ll4 5s average. Scoured wool, 19d to 21[d.
