THE PERMISSIVE BILL.
Petitions as adopted by the Otago Temperance Alliance, in ftvorof the Permissive Bill, and signed by 2,812 men and 1,216 women, making a total of 4,028 signatures, were despatched per s.s. Taranaki on Tuesday. The petitions, which are 106 ft. long, will be presented to the l egislative Assembly by the Hon. John Bathgate. The men’s petition is headed by the Right Rev. the I ord Bishop of Dunedin ; it also bears the signatures of a large number of the clergy and ministers of all denominations, medical and professional men, and members of the working class. The women’s petition has been signed by ladies of every class in society; but the majority of the signatures are those of the wives and daughters of working men. Copies of the petition were despatched by the honorary secretary to the Alliance, Mr Jas. B. M‘Culloch, to the clergy and ministers of all denominations, Good Templar Lodges, Sons and Daughters of Temperance Divisions, and other Temperance Societies in the Province of Otago.
