FOUND DROWNED.

An inquest was held at the fHoipital today, on the bedy of John M'Lean, a woolsorter, who was drowned in the Water of Leith last night, From the evidence given it appeared that the deceased left his home in Albany street, at about a quarter to three yesterday afternoon, to go to town to post a letter, and to register the birth of his child. He was afterwards seen opposite the Caledonia Hotel between four and five, by Mr Cotter, who described him as being sober, about the same time by Sergeant Holder, who described him as rather the worse for drink, and by some boys in Union street. He ran after one of them, who crossed a a bridge over the Water of Leith at the bottom ef Union street (the one used by the prisoners for wheeling metal across, and not the proper one for passenger traffic), and when midway across it his hat fell into the water, and in trying to recover it, he went into the stream. Having been told of the accident some time afterwards by the boys, a man named Jackson pulled him out of the water. He was then conveyed {to the Queen’s Hotel, and was examined by Dr Burns, who pronounced him dead. A verdict of “accidentally drowned,” with a rider recommending that the bridge should either be closed up, or made into a passable state, was returned.
