THE MAYORAL ELECTIONS.

THE CITY. The weather yesterday had much to do with the taraeness that characterised our Mayoral election. It was generally expected thai the contest would have been a very keen one, and each of the candidates would hare polled within a few votes of the others, but the reault was as much a surprise to the successful one as to the general public. The numbers polled were announced at about 5.30 p.m. by the Mayor, and the voting in the various wards was as follows:

Majority for Mercer, 340. The rain prevented anything like speechify, ing, but each of the candidates said a few words to those present. Mr Mercer's remarks were confined to promising that no endeavor should be wanting on his part to deserve the confidence that had been reposed in him ; and Mr Thoneman, in addition to thanking these who had voted and worked for him, inado the observation that he had had gr«at odds to contend against, and some of his friends who had known him for the last ten years had travelled twenty miles to vote for hint. Mr Barnes boasted that he had polkd the largest number of individual or lingie votes, and expressed the opinion that, next to himself, the man who had the beat claim to the office had been returned. THE COUNTRY. Tokomairixo—Cunningham, 79; Capstlck, 46; Goodall, 28. Clyde—B. Naylor. Alexandra—W. Beresford. Wajkouaiti-T. S. Pratt, 36; Smith, 26. Naseby.—Mr L. Buach waa eleoted Mayor of Faseby yesterday, by a majority of twenty-three. Great excitement prevailed.
