The Invercargill election took place yesterday, and resulted in the return of Mr Lumsden, the late member. The numbers polled were Lumsden .... 154 Tapper 132 Majority for Lumsden, 22. The Provincial Council nomination for Kawaran took place yesterday. Messrs Colelongh, Mackellar, and Vincent Pyke were proposed. The show of hands was ; Cololough, 15 ; Mackellar, 13 ; Pyke, 2. A Portobello correspondent writes “As an evidence of the strong feeling in this district in favor of the progressive party, a few settlers assembled on board the Peninsula steamer, yesterday evening, to celebrate the majorities in favor of Mr Macandrew and Mr Tolmie. The worthy skipper, Capt. Densen, and his friends, drank the healths of both candidates. Some songs were sung, and a pleasant evening passed.”
