CITY POLICE COURT.
Tuesday, June 17. (Before his Worship the Mayor.) Vagrancy. —Frank Emerson, alias Anderson alias Johnston, was charged with having bo visible means of support. Evidence was given by a man named Henry Lome, who stated that be was in defendant’s company on Saturday evening. They went to the Crown Hotel together, and afterwards to the Theatre. Previous to leaving the Crown Hotel, witness left three L5-notes with Mr James Campbell, the proprietor, to take care of, and still had eleven Ll-notes in his pocket. After going to the Theatre, accused ran away from him, and he missed his money. On returning to the hotel he informed Campbell of the robbery. Evidence was given by Detective Farrell, Sergeant Sevan, and Constable Bain, who stated that accused bad long been under the eye of the police. He attended the races, and was employed by some gamblers as a watcher, and when the Elice appeared, he gave the wink. He d been frequently cautioned, and on one occasion Sergeant Bevan put him off the Taieri Racecourse, and he had also been seen with drunken men at the theatre apparently waiting opportunity to fleece them.—Aceusedsaid on Saturday night complainant asked him to go for a walk, because he thought they were trying to swindle him at the Crown, making him buy things he did not want. Accused went to the theatre with him, and they called in at several hotels before returning to the Crown. On arriving at the Crown they were stopped by two girls, anl went to a house where they had seme drink, and then returned to the Crown. With regard to the charge of vagrancy, he said he had been out of employxnent for some time, but lived on some money sent by his father from Dundee, Scotland, through the Bank of New Zealand. He was also working at the Meat Preserving Company, Kakanui, some time ago, under the name of Frank Emerson, and had also run up a bill at the White Horse, where he was residing. Accused was remanded, for the purpose of seeing whether it was a true statement about the bank.
