THE SUPERINTENDENTAL ELECTION.

To the Editor. Sir,— l am afraid your correspondent “ Alpha,” in this evening’s Star, makes a mistake when he argues that because Mr Gillies at one time said he would never take any office while Mr Macandrew was Superintendent, but subsequently acted as Special Commissioner for the Goldfields, working men should therefore not vote for him, as he is a man so devoid of principle. Perhaps he is right in the main ; perhaps we should not vote for a man who has broken his promises. But, if so, I suppose the man who has broken his promises oftenest should receive the smallest share of our support. I am afraid, however, this won’t do. Some of our men bare Bsmctimea 'broken tbeir -word, may be more than once or twice. lam afraid we really must not let principle of this kind guide our choice, and I am afraid it is really unwise to publish the sentiment, inasmu hj as throwing dirt on our opponents causes neutrals to look at our own little faults. It would be well if all the supporters of our party were equally discreet: we should be bettor able to crush the M Obstructionists.”— 1 am, &c., Macandrewite. Dunedin, June 14. To the Editor. Sir, —Having an idea that Mr Macandrew has a leaning towards the squatting and speculative interests, 1 should like him to answer the following question through your columns before polling day, viz :—“ If elected Superintendent will he do all in his power to prevent large blocks of agricultural or mining . land being sold to speculators ?”—1 am, <fec., J. B. Dunedin, June 16.
