THE COUNTED.

TuAPKKA.— The whirligig of time does work its revenges. Two years ago, who would have thought that Mr Macandrew would be the most Sipmsr man in the' country, and the absolute ol of the Tuapeka populace. Yet such is the case, and l can assure you no candidate for the . Provincial Council need hope for success here . unless he professes himself ready to support the progressive apd far-sighted policy of the Superintendent.. And this change has been caused by no revulsion of public feeling, but by the steady growth of a conviction in the wisdom Of Mr ■ ■ Macandrew*s policy. We were wrong, at the last election, and, having acknowledged our error like men, we are determined to do our best to make amends for the past. Onr senior member, Mr Bastings, is certain of re-election, but our other member, Mr Brown, is far from being popular. His in-and-out policy during the recess, and devoted support of Mr Reid and his tail during the past sitting have greatly damaged his popularity. Further, it is felt that a district of the importance of Tuapeka should have as its representative a man of standing, ability, and education,, and to none of these qualities has Mr Brown the slightest pretension. He.is, emphatically, one of the Country members Mr Kcjraobis referred to,' and -will . not again, I think, have an opportunity allowed to stick out for the full honorarium.—Mr Carew has arrived here to tak the place of Mr Pyke.— There is some talk of an opposition newspaper being started, but, judging from what I know of the promoters, I do not think it likely to prove successful
