ELECTION INTELLIGENCE.
Mr Peter Aitcheson is a candidate for the representation of the Oamaru County. The gentlemen now avowedly in the field are Messrs Webster, Waddell, and Aitcheson. Mr 0. de Vere Teschcmaker has announced himself as another candidate for the representation of the Moeraki District.
The nomination for the Clutba took place at Balclutha to-day. Major Richardson,"Mr John M'Neil {the Mayor), Mr J. W. Thomson, and Mr D. Henderson were proposed. The show of hands was—Major Richardson, 2 8; M'Neil, 11; Thomson, 8; Henderson, 6. Mr Thomson demanded a poll, which will be taken on the 14th. Mr Gillies addressed the Matanra electors in the Courthouse at Mataura Bridge last night. He had a hearty reception, and received an unanimous vote of confidence, and pledges of support.—Mr Gillies addresses the Southland electors at Invercargill to-night. Mr Hallenstein telegraphs that he has received several requisitions to induce him to reconsider his determination not to become a candidate for the Lake district in the Provincial Council. Ho has accepted conditionally. Mr Horace Bastings addressed the electors of the Lawrence district, last night, at the Commercial Assembly Rooms. The room was crowded to the ceiling. He was enthusiastically received, and a vote of confidence unanimously passed. His return is sure.
Mr Leary addressed the electors at the Forbury schoolroom, last night. He said that, if returned, he would be a warm supporter of the pr sent Government, as during his knowledge of Provincialism he had never seen a Provincial Executive more worthy of the confidence oj the country. Referring to the necessity of drainage and flood-gates for the township, he said the inhabitants of the district were as much interested as those in the City in having the channel from the head of the Bay to the Port deepened, as it was the only means of securing safe drainage to South Kensington and Forbury. He was also in favor of having a centrally-situ-ated polling booth for Caversham, where those who were daily employed in business could record their votes without inconvenience, A vote of confidence was carried unani mously, and a strong committee formed to secure his return.
