Wellington, May 29. Sent 1.45 p m. ; received 3 40. The next Pastoral Society’s exhibit on is fixed for the 15th October, at Havelock. An Education Bill is to be introduced into the Council and circulated. It imposes household rates, varying from LI to Lo according to the value of the house ; also a tax of LI on unmarried men not householders, in receipt of wages above a certain amount. It limits school fees to one shilling per week per child; not more than four children in any case to be paid for. Religious instruction to be non-coutroversial, and at previously stated hours, so that children may be withdrawn. The ten single women who arrived per Wild Duck having so readily found employment, have all since nominated female relations as immigrants. The Government have not received any Native news of importance. Parliament will almost certainly, meet in the second week of July.
In the Court ofAppal, the conviction in the case of Regina v. Palmer is quashed. In Regina ▼, Barclay, and Begins v. Woodman, the convictions are affirmed. .' -
Christchurch May 29. The Christchurch extension©! the Southern Railway, ten miles to Rakaia, was opened to* day. A special train conveyed the Snperin* tendent, Kxecutive and Provincial Councillors, Messrs Stafford, Bathgate, Reynolds, and Moorhouse oyer the line. At the dtjeuner in the woolshed on the bank of the Rakaia, Mr Stafford, in proposing the toast of the Provincial Council, said Mr Moorhouse was the real originator of the railway scheme in New Zealand, and that practical experience had shown that his cumulations made in 1859 were remarkably accurate. Tbe Council last night adopted the report of the Committee affirming the advisability of subsidising any railway by grants of land, or extending the liabilities of the Province to railways boyond its 1 oundaries. The report of the Committee on the importation of stock was alto adopted. Thirty gentlemen have subscribed L 598 towards establishing a free libnry’ Mr George Gould heads the list with LIOO, The local Press advocates the Council voting a sum towards the necessary buildings.
Auckland, May 29. The chief Paul, of Oraki, leaves to-morrow for Te Kuiti. _ He goes on his own account, and does not interfere with the Government plans. A sale of Provincial waste lands yesterday realised L 676. Mr Mackay has arrived at Hamilton. Auckland, May 30. The Hon. Sail Samuels, PoatmasterGeneralof .New South Wales, is a passenger by the Hero, to negotiate with the New Zealand Government for a Californian mail Service. He afterwards visits London and America. Late Fiji advices report that a mountain tribe attacked the Rewa River Natives, killing over sixty. Sent 11.30 a.m.; received 2.45 p.m. The Hero has arrived. She left Sydney on the 24th. s The cable between hydras and Penang is still interrupted. Occasional messages are received via Liberia and China, Sydney, May 24. Arrived : Victoria, from Auckland. The Government has received information from Victoria that Mr Francis accepts the draft of the Border Customs Treaty last sent. The duties will cease to be collected on the Ist of June.
