POLITICAL INTELLIGENCE.
Mr Green bank, of Dry bread, opposes Mr Shepherd at Clyde. We are authorised to state that there is no foundation for the statement made by the Daily Times this morning, that Messrs Bastings and Oliver intend to contest the election for Mount Ida against Messrs Armstrong and Mervyn.
We {Tuapelca Times) understand that a requisition is now in course of signature, asking Captain Baldwin to come forward as a candidate for the Mount Benger district at the forthcoming election. If he consents to stand, we are sure we are expressing the general opinion when we say that no better qualified candidate could be found to represent the district. He has been intimately connected with it since its earliest days, and therefore knows its wants and requirements. The district has hitherto been shamefully and grossly neglected. We have not heard wh ther Mr Bradshaw purposes contesting the Mount Benger district again. Shouldhe do so, it is certain he will have opposition, either in tbe person of Captain Baldwin or some other gentleman. Mr J. C. Brown offers himself for the Tuapeka district. The feeling in the Mount Benger district is, according to the Tuapeka Times, strongly in favor of the Tolmie Government,
Mr Lumsden, M.P.C., addressed a large meeting at Invercargill last night, on the present position of Provincial politics. He expressed himself opposed to the course adopted by Mr Macandrew, and said the question at issue was whether the Province was to be governed constitutionally or submit to a petty despotism. He declared himself a candidate for re-election. A vote of confidence was carried almost unanimously, only four hands being held up against it.
