THE MAYORALTY.
To the Editor.
Fin,—Tf the local which appears in your paper of this morning’s issue he correct, in reference to MrThoncinan and the Mayoralty, then that gentleman must have undergone a most “ sudden conversion,” for on Wednesday night last, in speaking to a motion, in a very pathetic manner he implored the Council to “ be careful in future, for he would not be amongst them very long.” Truly he must have been well handled. It is my opinion that Mr Thoneman cannos lay claim to the office of Mayor on the sc ire of long service. Why did he not contest the election last year instead of allowing <t junior member to come to the front ? Is it not a fact that a number of Councillors, also a very large number of ratepayers, requested him to contest the election last year I <>r did he require twelve months’: more training to fit him for the duties incumbent on the office?. Katepaycrs will do well to abstain from making promises or being entrapped into signing requisitions. 1 am, &c.,
Henry J. Walter, Occidental Hotel, May 12.
