In the Tichbome trial, Mr Hawkins, Q.C., for the prosecution, elaborately sketched the history of Arthur Orton, with whom he sought to establish the identity of the claimant. The result of the supplementary election has been the return of three radicals, four moderate republicans, and one legitimist. M. Thiers expressed his firm resolution to establish the Republic, and maintain in its integrity universal suffrage. He feared, however, the effects of Barodet’s election for Paris, one wavering member of the Assembly, whose support is indispensable, and may prevent the President carrying out his views.
