The following notes, showing the nnmbet of perrons introduced into Canterbury and Otaco under the Genera: Government immigration scheme, which have been gleaned from thfl public records, arc of interest at the present time. The Provincial .Governments virtuallj ceased to conduct immigration after the passing of the Immigration and public Works Act, on September 12, 1870 ; but it wa? not until January, 1872, that actual operations were begun by the General Government. On tho latter date tho A gent-General entered into a contract with Shaw, Saville, and Co. ; and from that time to March 31 last, the following ships hawe been despatched : To Canterbury.
