Tuesday, May 6. (Before his Worship the Mayor and J. Brown, Esq., J.P.)
Ship Desertion, —Samuel Clarkson was charged with deserting the brigantine Oreti, while lying in Dunedin harbor, on the 3rd inst. Chas. W. Bartlett, captain of the ©reti, produced the vessel’s articles. He stated that the accused shipped with him on. Saturday morning, after signing thO articles. He went as cook., but leflj the same time, under the pretence of getting his clothes, and did not return. Witness had been detained from going to sea for two days, and had shipped another cook last night, and therefore did not require accused’s services. The Bench thought desertion from ships was very prevalent, and a source of great annoyance and loss to the captain. He was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment with hard labor.
