Saturday, noon,
Business during the past week has been quiet and uneventful, the broken weather of the last two or three (lays contributing to a dull feeling. In the import markets some moderate transactions have been carried through, with, however, little of a specially noteworthy character occurng. (rood orders from the up-country districts are to hand, but owing to a scarcity of carriage, it has been difficult to get aw.ay loading. The grain market has shown a steady trade, and more numerous growers’ parcels offering. Brices show no change, and prospects are for the present unaltered. Ideally good wheats are atari average ((notation of Is (id, and some fairsized lots are reported as having changed hands. Oats remain worth ds, and as even at this figure there has been a disposition to hold, the sales have been but moderate. The few lots of barley coming in have been readily placed, and the value for good malting samples is about 7s dd to 7s 6d. A little export inquiry continues to enliven flour, and millers report a good demand, during the whole of the past week. Quotations are JMI 10s to JA2 for the best town-made. Provisions of all descriptions are in good request, and prices look slightly better. Good Canterbury cheese is quote* I at Sd, and parcels of hams and bacon readily bring Old to lOd. Butter, which is now imported from the North in only small quantities, is worth Old to lOd. Sugars have been in good request, and, in the face of present advices, are very firm. Stocks have been augmented _by the arrival of the Hadda, from Mauritius, but we believe no further direct supplies will immediately reach. For shipments of iron and fencing wire now coming in, advanced rates are 9, ked, but recent sales have been small, and higher rates cannot bo considered as established. Ales and stouts in glass continue to be inquired for, but the incomings are so small that the consumption is almost thrown upon Colonial. Ales in bulk are commanding no sale, and are not now coming forward. In spirits there has been a rather better inquiry, prices remaining stationary. Hennessy’s brandy stands at 7s, and case of the same brand 28s. Other brands range from os 9d to (is (id; and case, 19s to 2 Is. There have been light sales of malt at prices below last week’s ((notations, and the market is now supplied with parcels arrived and to come. Hops have been very quiet, and the good supply of Colonial baa much lessened the inquiry for 'English. In kerosene there lias been a little business, though holders have scarcely made a sufficient concession to induce business to any extent. ('onisacks quoted at 1.8s; sales trifling. There has been a good demand for most light grocery goods and oilmen’s stores, values for some of these items showing improvement.
